Weekend Retreat with Some of Our Communities Most Inspiring 5th& 6th Graders
Over the past year, various youth serving organizations in the Boise area have come together with one idea in mind: to empower a handful of our most deserving youth, while providing them with the opportunity to succeed and become leaders. Big Brothers Big Sisters, the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and Girl Scouts, with the help of the United Way and the Rotary Club, selected a handful of promising young children at the beginning of the school year who show impeccable leadership qualities, but who may need a little extra help along the way.
Over the weekend, representatives from the aforementioned organizations along with 18 5th and 6th graders celebrated the many accomplishments that they have achieved over the past year, while having fun camping at Girl Scout Camp Alice Pittenger in McCall. The weekend was spent hiking, playing games, doing teambuilding and self-reflection exercises, and having sand castle contests! Additionally, with the gracious help of Dwayne Blackaller, actor, playwright, and director, children were exposed to a swarm of theater activities which promote teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills. With Blackaller’s guidance, all of the children created a 2 minute monologue which celebrated their pasts, present, and futures. Each child presented their monologue to the group the final night of camp around the campfire, which was very heartfelt and inspiring.
The weekend was a remarkable culmination of everything that these 5th and 6th grade leaders from around the valley have learned over the past school year.
We could not be more proud of each individual that participated in the Youth Collaborative Camp this past weekend; this will not be the last time that we hear about these incredible leaders!
